long education, but there is still a long way to go, as alex for site from lebanon. these are the hands of the child doing work and adults should do. atjust 12, nasser is one of the oldest in his family, which left syria two years ago. his mechanic's wage is vital to help feed his six siblings. translation: i can't go to school, because i have to help my family. they don't make enough money, so i have to work. even those too small to work face barriers to education, like these boys. they live in one room in a freezing stable block, after their family left aleppo five years ago. hassan‘s only experience of a classroom is what he dreams of in his mind. translation: i have never been to school, and i am six now. i imagine a school is very nice.
6:31 pm
i think the teachers would give me biscuits and teach us to sing and dance. their nearest school is an hour's walk away. struggling to pay the rent and facing eviction, there is no money for the bus. translation: i stopped going to school because it was too dark on the way home. there were three dogs that scared me. in the refugee camps in the countries that surround syria, aid is thinly stretched. billions of pounds has been donated, but overall, it is still only between half and tw— thirds of what the un needs. —— between half and two—thirds of what the un needs. a year ago, world leaders met in london and pledged that every syrian child who has been forced to flee their home would get access to quality education. 12 months on, and here in lebanon alone, around half of refugee children don't go to school. for theirfamilies, the priority is simply survival.
6:32 pm
progress has been made, and lebanon's schools run second sessions to accommodate syrian pupils. but teachers say the money to pay for them falls short. at the school, it barely covers the cost of heating. and for many families, when even food is scarce, education comes second — when the needs are so great, international efforts, however well—intentioned, are still failing to stop many syrian children becoming part of a lost generation. time to cross to the bbc sport centre now for sportsday. hello, and welcome to sportsday with me, olly foster, and tim hague. good evening to you. these are our headlines this evening: the six nations starts with a magical murrayfield afternoon for scotland beating one of the tournament favourites, ireland.
6:33 pm
england have started the defence of their title — they are playing france at twickenham. chelsea are 12 points clear at the top after beating arsenal at stamford bridge. also coming up in the programme... great britain's davis cup tie against canada has resumed with the doubles. it's i rubber all in ottawa. and bees stop play in the third one—dayer between south africa and sri lanka. good evening.
6:34 pm
so many goals to tell you about in the premier legaue today, but we're going to start with the tries and kicks in the the six nations. the championship is underway, and the first match was a classic at murrayfield, with scotland and ireland sharing six tries. but it was the boot of the scots captain greig laidlaw that made the difference. his two late penalties gave the home side a 27—22 win. it's the first time since 2006 that scotland have won their opening match in the six nations. connor mcnamara was at murrayfield. an awful lot of optimism and confidence around the start of the build—up to the six nations championship from a scottish point of view, and that hype has been justified with is very impressive opening performance against and ireland team who did so well against the powerhouses of the southern hemisphere in the autumn internationals, but this was to beat scotland's day. the start of the six nations is always special but at murrayfield this year's championship spark a special kind of anticipation. optimism surrounds scottish rugby

at the moment with the excellent form of their club sides, but on the national stage they still struggle to convert that promise into points. this had been billed as the battle between ireland's forwards and scotland's backs. no question who made the impact early on. stuart hogg, last year's player of the tournament, he began this one in the same form. after the initial flurry scotland had to weather the irish storm, but hogg could still show some individual skill... two chances, two scores, two tries for scotland! but ireland did not panic. keith earls taking advantage of this interception to make sure his side stayed in contention. scotland knew they had to take their chances, and a move straight from the training ground before half—time stalled their lead. the second half was a different appear. —— a different. scotland began to be outmuscled. —— a different affair. iain henderson bundled over,
6:36 pm
before paddy jackson touched down to put his side right in it. jackson's conversion put ireland at head but there was still time for scotland captain greig laidlaw to demonstrate his coolness under pressure. with less than ten minutes to go, penalty gave scotland a two—point cushion. this time they held on. laidlaw took his time with the last penalty, ensuring it was the final kick of the match that gave his side their first win in the opening week of the championship for over ten years. great celebration from the scotland camp at the end. this was the reaction from the scotland coach vern cotter. the guys managed to prove themselves and we could claw oui’ prove themselves and we could claw our way back in at the end so i think it is a great win for them and will validate a lot of the work they have been doing, so i am just really happy and, yes, quite a nice feeling, to be honest. we got very close to getting away from them but when you do not get away from a team
6:37 pm
playing at home with a much to play for, you know, you are always at risk of them coming back and perhaps getting something in the end. saw a really good start for scotland and something they will hope to build on now throughout the rest of the six nations championship. remarkably, since the five nations became the six nations, only once in that era have scotland won their opening game. so often they are playing catch up. this time, they are reading from the front. yes, good start for scotland. the champions england have started the defence of their title they kicked off at ten to five against france at twickenham. england completed the grand slam in paris last year but the french have made life very difficult for eddie jones' men. they were fortunate to be level at the break after an under—par display. elliott daly pulled them level from 50 metres. 9—9 the score at half—time. it looked as though england's
6:38 pm
unbeaten run under eddiejones was coming to an end then there was this try with ten minutes to go. a couple of minutes to go, england were reading 19—16 —— leading. a really tight one at twickenham. england also start their campaign in the women's six nations this evening. they'll play france at twickenham staright after the mens match. england were denied the grand slam by the french last year, france winning the title. they've since turned professional, and captain sarah hunter says victory today is key as they look to build to the future. the women's competition is so competitive now that we cannot get ahead of ourselves. we will deal with them, prepare as best as we can, take ourselves too twickenham, and that in a performance that we would want to do to get the victory, and from there on we will look ahead to the rest of the competition. wales women made up for last
6:39 pm
year's defeat to italy. they won 20—8 in what was a rare win away from home. captain carys phillips securing the 12—point lead. a12 point win a 12 point win against the italians. to the football — there are eight matches in the premier league today. we've had seven results and 27 goals. the first of which came at stamford bridge, as chelsea stretched their lead at the top of the table. they beat third—placed arsenal 3—1 in the lunchtime kick—off. the arsenal manager, arsene wenger, who's serving a touchline ban, said the blues opener was "100% a foul" on hector bellerin, who had to be substituted with concussion. chelsea still eased to victory and are now 12 points clear. patrick gearey reports. it must cost enough to furnish chelsea's changing room, let alone fill it. they shop at the high—end of football's market. but gold's one thing. to be champions you need granite, too.
6:40 pm
the substance that makes you win that header and, crucially, win the next one. goal to alberto moreno. arsenal couldn't stop him, but should the referee have? it was a header which symbolised a half. for 45 minutes arsenal were bullied. then after the break eden hazard taunted them further. the defending careless, the dribbling peerless, the finnish priceless. -- finish. and roman abramovich knows all about cost. also in the stands, arsene wenger, banished by the fa, and forced to radio in orders. the team operating on different wavelengths. petr cech, once of chelsea, two cesc fabregas, once of arsenal. 3-0. embarrassing, it seemed, for everyone. by the time olivier giroud scored for the gunners, they knew it was too late. they couldn't catch chelsea. but then can anyone? i am very pleased for my players, because they deserve this. in every game, in every training session, they show great attitude, great behaviour, great will to try to fight, to try to win this league, and now it is important
6:41 pm
to continue because today they can finish the championship. we have lost many times in situations where we have shown we lack a little bit of maturity, experience, and i think as well individually some of our players we re individually some of our players were not at their best today. we needed to be better today to beat them after being 1—0 down, but they do not lose against the big teams, and that is always the secret when you have such a big advantage. it is the secret to win the championship. liverpool's terrible start to 2017 has continued — they were beaten 2—0 at hull city. that's their fourth defeat in five league and cup games. it's a massive result for hull, though, who are down near the bottom trying to get out of the relegation zone. and they followed up their draw at manchester united in midweek with victory today — alfred n'diaye, signed on loan from villarreal, scoring on his city debut, before another loanee, oumar niasse, got the second late on.
6:42 pm
we gave them an opportunity, we made presents around the goals. we didn't score, but ourselves again under massive pressure being 1—o score, but ourselves again under massive pressure being 1—0 down. that is not now usually the biggest problem in the world because it happens in football but obviously with... yes, happens in football but obviously with. .. yes, with happens in football but obviously with... yes, with the last few weeks, when we couldn't get the results, it is not that easy. that is why you should try to do everything to avoid situations like this and to be as strong as you can from the first second. a fantastic result for us. very good performance. we played as a team. for our supporters, fantastic. in out for our supporters, fantastic. in ourstadium, we for our supporters, fantastic. in
6:43 pm
our stadium, we showed we needed them, they came with us and they played with us, and for our players, they were fantastic. when our opponent played our team backs, we suffered, but again, most important. a great result for hull. but before continuing with the premier league, it is full—time in the six nations match. 19—16 was the score, england stealing that. back to the football. below hull in the table are crystal palace and sunderland — they faced each other at selhurst park and it was a massive win for sunderland. 4—0 to them. a terrible day for sam allardyce, as he watched his side conceded all those goals by the break. jermaine defoe scored twice in first half injury time. on the other end of the scale, it couldn't have gone better for david moyes' sunderland, who stay bottom but move level on points with palace. palace fans were far from happy — one ran onto the pitch and confronted defender damien delaney.
6:44 pm
i think we knew the task we would be up i think we knew the task we would be up againsta i think we knew the task we would be up against a day. palace had a great win midweek, as did we against totte n ha m. win midweek, as did we against tottenham. but today we took opportunities when they came along and it was really important for us. ido and it was really important for us. i do not think many times as a manager, i was i do not think many times as a manager, i was ever i do not think many times as a manager, i was ever 4—0 up. the big thing was not to do anything stupid in the second half, not to give palace and easy way back into the game. we actually thought we would score on the counterattack in the second half and there was a couple of occasions where we nearly dead. —— nearly did. for me it looks like fear. i think the fear we are suffering at crystal palace is evident to me now. it is swansea, the last and we had a big game like this, and these games are bigger than playing manchester united and chelsea because they are big six pointers, and the fear has gripped
6:45 pm
the players and that has not allowed them to express the ability they have got. it mightjust it might just tell you, it mightjust tell you, it is about to go up to 28 goals possibly, yes, it has, we will fill you in that a little later. well, on a day of goals, everton fans certainly got their money's worth at goodsion park. everton beat bournemouth 6—3! romelu lukaku got 4 of them, his first coming after 31 seconds . it was 3—nil at halftime and though josh king scored twice to pull it it was 3—0 at halftime and though josh king scored twice to pull it back to 3—2 for the cherries in the second half, lukaku added another couple inside the last 10 minutes. ross barkely made it six. harry arter also scored for the visitors. not a great advert for defending, but the home crowd won't be bothered by that, will they? we needed to come out firing. we worked on a whole week. the players we re worked on a whole week. the players were there, we were sharp. it was good to score after 30 seconds, then we continued pressing, playing good football going forward. you know, 3-0 at football going forward. you know, 3—0 at half—time was good, then when we came out we knew we had to be mentally sharp, but we were not and we let them come back into the game
6:46 pm
and that was poor from us. west ham continue to move up the premier league table, and there knowing the top half two andy carroll goals southern comeback from being behind at southampton. saints took an early lead when £14 million deadline day signing manolo gabbiadini got the opener on his debut. but in—form carroll equalised and then put the hammers ahead with a 30—yard effort. west ham skipper mark noble sealed the points with a deflected free—kick in the second half. six defeats in their last seven league games for southampton, three wins in fourfor the hammers... the guys did fantastic. we had game plan, 0k, the guys did fantastic. we had game plan, ok, but we did itand the guys did fantastic. we had game plan, ok, but we did it and executed it in the best possible way. we were behind the ball, close them down, scored three goals. basically a great performance. great performance. watford followed up their surprise win at arsenal on tuesday with another three points against burnley at vicarage road. 2—1 the score.
6:47 pm
watford's m'baye niang scored one on on hsi home debut and made another for troy deeney. burnley‘s miserable away record continues. the clarets haven't won on their travels since last may, and had midfielderjeff hendrick sent off early too, for a two—footed challenge. ashley barnes scored for them. watford are back into the top half of the table. we have a couple of really good chances, we got a penalty from a good chance just before that, you know, and to be fair that one goal, the great save from tom heaton, and other than that for so much of the gamei other than that for so much of the game i thought we were excellent, particularly in the second half, so the result got away from us but i would not knock our performance. there was no happy return to the hawthorns for saido berahino as his stoke side lost 1—0 to his former club west brom. it's six wins from their last seven home games now for the baggies. there's been a lot of talk this week from the opposing managers about berahino, he served a two month doping ban at west brom, and it looked as though tony pulis and mark hughes didn't shake hands at the final whistle.
6:48 pm
james morrison got the only goal of the game for west brom afterjust six minutes. berahino did come on as a second half substitute for stoke but had little impact, and was booed by the home fans throughout. chelsea are 12 points clear at the top as you know, but second—placed spurs could reduce that to nine with victory at home to middlesbrough in the late kick—off. and they have just taken the lead. sung—joon men brought down in the penalty box, referee pointed to the spot and harry kane stepped up to convert the spot kick. such as it was my could be down to nine if totte n ha m was my could be down to nine if tottenham hang on. that is why he was so tottenham hang on. that is why he was so happy! let's see the table as it stands. antonio conte's men might
6:49 pm
be lifting the league title in may. but tottenham hotspurs might have a thing to say about it, although there are north london rivals arsenal and liverpool are falling behind after their defeat is today. manchester city and manchester united both in action tomorrow. down at the bottom, those victories for two of the bottom to put the pressure on crystal palace even more now and besides just above the relegation zone. sean thrashing palace as you heard and hull's victory against liverpool, giving swa nsea victory against liverpool, giving swansea and leicester city plenty to think about before their match is against the manchester teams tomorrow. to scotland now... in the day's early game, hearts beat ten—man motherwell 3—0. the home side had carl mchugh sent off early in the second half for this lunge on don cowie. and just six minutes later hearts made the advantage count, they went in front through alexandros tziolis'
6:50 pm
deflected strike. two goals in the final five minutes sealed it for the away side, both scored by esmael goncalves — his first goals for the club. hearts stay fourth. motherwell drop down to ninth. elswhere aberdeen beat patrick thistle 2—0 to move upto 2nd in the table. rangers drew one all with ross county. they are level on points with aberdeen — that's 2a points below leaders celtic — but behind them on goal difference.hamilton academicals and kilmarnock drew 1—1. bottom of the table inverness drew with dundee 2—2. in the championship's late game, nottingham forest are hosting aston villa. they haven't actually met outside the top division at the city ground since the mid—70s, not that jonathan kodjia cared when he put villa ahead. forest levelled just before half time though — britt assombalonga pounced after a mistake by villa's goalkeeper sam johnstone, we're into the second half now and it's still 1—1.
6:51 pm
and here are the other results... all of that is on the bbc sport website of course. great britain's davis cup tie against canada has resumed with the doubles it's tied at 1—1 after yesterday's singles rubbers. andy murray's been rested from leon smith's squad to give him time to recover after the australian open. on court right now is jamie murray and dom inglot who're playing daniel nestor and vasek pospisil. still serve in the closing stages of that set. 6—5, as you can see there.
6:52 pm
it is live on the website. they will find out who they get if they get through. you should really leave after that joke, olly, come on! whilst bees stop the cricket, bad likes nearly cost sergio garcia problems, however he continues to lead in the dubai desert classic. he has a three shot lead going into the final round, despite not seeing where he hit his final three shots. the leaders had to finish their third round in almost total darkness to make up for lost time yesterday. it did not seem to foster sergio garcia, who birdied his final two calls. henrik stenson and ian poulter are in the lead, leading the chasers who are three and five shots back respectively. england have provided one of the
